Introducing the New PaperScorer Engine
Faster. Smarter. More Durable. Built for Real Classrooms.
We’re excited to officially introduce the brand-new PaperScorer engine — a complete rebuild designed to deliver greater accuracy, flexibility, and reliability for today’s classrooms.
In this article, we’ll walk you through what’s new, why we rebuilt the engine from the ground up, and how you can upgrade early before our full migration later this year.
Why We Rebuilt the Engine
Before we talk about where we’re going, let’s briefly look at where we’ve been...

Our legacy engine served thousands of classrooms reliably for years. But as usage grew and assessments became more robust, we identified clear areas for improvement.
For example:
- Printing 100 questions required two separate sheets
- If students wrote across borders, scans could fail
- Staples on multi-page assessments could cause misreads
- Low printer ink could break borders and impact scanning
- Minor formatting issues could result in failed uploads
While the legacy engine worked well under ideal conditions, real classrooms are not ideal environments — and we knew we needed to build something more resilient.
Our goal was simple:
Eliminate fragile failure points and make scanning work in real-world testing conditions.
A Complete Rebuild from the Ground Up
We didn’t just patch the old system — we rebuilt the engine entirely.
The result is a redesigned testing sheet and a significantly more advanced scanning engine built for flexibility and durability.

What’s New?
✅ 100 Questions on a Single Sheet
At first glance, you’ll notice a major improvement: 100 questions now fit cleanly on one sheet — even with the student ID grid included. This reduces paper usage, printing time, and assessment prep complexity.
✅ Improved Student ID Grid
We redesigned the student ID grid with vertical columns to help students easily identify:
- Missed columns (gaps)
- Double-filled columns
And here’s the best part:
If a student still makes a mistake in their ID, the sheet will still upload to the app, allowing the test administrator to correct the ID digitally — no need to fix or reprint the physical sheet.
Built for Real-World Durability
Classrooms are messy. Papers get wrinkled. Ink runs low. Students don’t always color perfectly.
So we asked:
What would it take to make a sheet that scans reliably even when things aren’t perfect?
The answer is the new PaperScorer engine.
Even if a sheet:
- Has minor border breaks
- Includes incidental marks
- Contains light printing imperfections
- Shows normal classroom wear
…it will still scan.

Yes — it will still scan.
While we certainly hope your completed testing sheets don’t look like worst-case scenarios, the new engine is designed to be extremely forgiving and flexible in everyday classroom conditions.
This means fewer rescans.
Fewer frustrated teachers.
And more time focused on instruction instead of troubleshooting.
Upgrading to the New Engine
We are officially migrating all users to the new engine on:
📅 July 6, 2026
This summer timeline gives educators ample time to prepare and adjust workflows before the next school year begins.
Want Early Access?
You don’t have to wait.
You can enable the new engine today through our BETA feature:
Simply toggle the new engine on within your account settings.
- You can switch back to the legacy engine at any time before July 6, 2026.
- The new engine will continue to read legacy sheets.
- However, the legacy engine cannot read the new sheet format.
We recommend testing the new engine when it feels right for your workflow. Many users are already making the switch and benefiting from improved flexibility and reliability.
Our Commitment During the Transition
We understand that changes to assessment workflows matter. That’s why our support team is fully prepared to assist during this transition.
If you experience any technical issues or have questions, please reach out. We are committed to responding quickly and ensuring the migration is smooth for every classroom.
The Future of Paper-Based Scanning Is Here
The new PaperScorer engine represents more than just an update — it’s a long-term investment in reliability, simplicity, and classroom-ready technology.
We’re proud of what we’ve built, and we’re excited for you to experience it.
When you're ready, flip the switch and see the difference.
