Aligning Assessments to Standards

Aligning assessment questions to educational standards lets PaperScorer report on student mastery of specific learning objectives — not just overall test scores. This article explains how to browse the built-in standards library, attach standards to questions, and create custom standards for your district.

Standards alignment is a Teacher Pro feature. The standards browser, picker, and reporting views require an active Pro subscription.

What Standards Are

Standards are formal learning objectives published by educational authorities — Common Core, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), state-specific standards, and others. Attaching a standard to a question tells PaperScorer: “this question measures mastery of objective X.”

Once standards are attached, you can:

  • Report on student performance by standard, not just by question.
  • Group questions by standard in the assessment’s analysis views.
  • Include standards data in exported CSVs for standards-based gradebooks.

The Standards Library

PaperScorer ships with a hierarchical library of public standards. Each standard sits inside a chain of containers:

The hierarchy makes it easy to drill down from the broad (a region) to the specific (a single standard).

Browsing Standards

  1. From the main navigation, open Standards.
  2. Use the filters to narrow by region, publication, subject, or grade.
  3. Click into a publication / subject / grade to see the standards within.

Searching

Use the search bar to find standards by code (e.g. 5.NF.A.1 ) or by keyword (e.g. equivalent fractions ). Search works across code, title, and description fields.

Attaching Standards to a Question

  1. Open an assessment.
  2. Click into the question you want to tag.
  3. Find the Standards section of the question’s edit form.
  4. Click Add Standard to open the picker.
  5. In the picker, search or browse to the standard you want.
  6. Click to select — you can pick more than one if the question measures multiple objectives.
  7. Save the question.

TIP: a question can have multiple standards attached, but reports become more interpretable when you keep alignment focused. If you find yourself attaching four or more standards to a single question, consider whether the question is doing too many things at once.

Bookmarked Standards

Most teachers reuse the same set of standards across an entire grading period. Bookmarking your most-used standards puts them at the top of the picker for faster access.

  1. Open a standard from the browser or picker.
  2. Click the bookmark icon.
  3. The standard is added to your bookmarks and pre-populated in future pickers.

To remove a bookmark, click the icon again from the bookmarked-standards list.

Recently Viewed Standards

PaperScorer also tracks the standards you’ve recently viewed or attached, and surfaces them at the top of the picker when you’re tagging a new question. This is especially helpful when you’re tagging a whole assessment’s worth of questions to a related cluster of standards.

Creating Custom Standards

If your district uses internal standards that aren’t covered by the published authorities, you can add your own.

Adding a Single Custom Standard

  1. Open Standards.
  2. Click Add Custom Standard.
  3. Fill in:
    • Code — a short identifier (e.g. DIST-MATH-5.1 ).
    • Description — a sentence describing what the standard measures.
  4. Save.

Custom standards are stored under a dedicated CUSTOM region. They’re visible to the user who created them (or, for enterprise accounts, to the whole enterprise).

Bulk-Importing Custom Standards via CSV

For larger imports, use the CSV importer:

  1. Open Standards → Import.
  2. On the import page, note the two required columns it lists — code  and description  — with their expected type and length.
  3. Fill in one row per standard with code  and description  columns.
  4. Upload the completed CSV.

This is the fastest way to get a district’s full custom standards library into PaperScorer in one shot.

Editing or Deleting Custom Standards

You can edit or delete only the standards you created. Published standards from Common Core, NGSS, and similar authorities are read-only.

  1. Find your custom standard in the Standards list (filter by region = CUSTOM to see only your own).
  2. Open the row’s action menu.
  3. Choose Edit or Delete.

WARNING: deleting a custom standard also removes it from any questions you previously attached it to. The questions remain intact, but they lose the alignment. There is no undo.

Attaching Standards to Rubrics

For open-response questions graded with a rubric, you can attach standards to individual rubric criteria — not just to the question as a whole. This lets you assess mastery of a standard via specific rubric dimensions. See Creating and Managing Rubrics.

Tips for Useful Standards Alignment

  • Tag at creation, not after. Aligning standards when you build the assessment is much easier than going back later — you remember the intent of each question.
  • Be specific. One focused standard beats five vague ones. Reports get cleaner.
  • Use the same standard consistently. Don’t mix 5.NF.A.1  with CCSS.5.NF.A.1  across questions — they look like different standards to the reporting layer.
  • Aim for multiple data points per standard. A single question per standard is fragile; three or more gives you much better signal for instructional decisions.
  • Review coverage before testing. Look at which standards an assessment covers (and doesn’t) before you give it — you may want to balance the coverage.
