Getting started with the PaperScorer Mobile App
This article gives a general overview of the PaperScorer mobile app, how it fits alongside other ways of getting scanned sheets into your account, and how to install it and run your first scan.
What the Mobile App Does (and Doesn’t Do)
The app does:
- Capture images of completed answer sheets using your phone’s camera
- Upload captured sheets to your PaperScorer account
- Cache scans when offline and upload them when you reconnect
The app does not:
- Create assessments
- Display results or grades
- Grade or correct answers
- Manage students or classes
Why is it separate? Scanning is a physical, hands-on task — you need both hands and a phone. Reviewing results is a seated, screen-focused task better suited to a larger screen. PaperScorer splits the two intentionally to keep each focused.
The Three Scanning Methods

You can use any combination — results from all three methods land in the same place in the web app.
When the Mobile App Is the Right Choice
- You don’t have access to a flatbed or document scanner.
- You’re grading 1–20 sheets at a time — a quick batch on the spot.
- You want to scan a few sheets right after a quiz and see the green-indicator confirmation in real time.
- You’re scanning across multiple classrooms and want to capture each batch as you visit them.
- You’re handling absent-student makeups or a one-off sheet rather than a full class.
When to Use Bulk Upload Instead
- You have 30+ sheets to process at once.
- You have access to a document scanner with a feeder.
- You’d rather scan a stack into a single multi-page PDF and let PaperScorer process all pages in one upload.

All scan results and assessment data live in the PaperScorer web app only. The mobile app captures sheets and sends them for processing — it doesn’t display scores or rosters. View results in the web app’s assessment scan history.
Installing the App
The PaperScorer mobile app is available on both major platforms:
- iOS: Open the App Store and search for PaperScorer. The publisher is Classify Learning.
- Android: Open Google Play and search for PaperScorer. The publisher is Classify Learning.
Minimum requirements: iOS 15 or later; Android 10 or later. See Minimum Technical Requirements for the full supported-platform list.
Granting Permissions
On first launch, the app requests a few permissions:
- Camera (required): the app needs camera access to capture sheets. Tap Allow — without it, the app can’t function.
- Internet: automatic; the app uses your cellular or Wi-Fi connection to upload scans.
- Photos (optional): some versions of the app offer importing existing photos from your library. You can grant or deny this without affecting normal scanning.
Signing In
You’ll sign in with the same PaperScorer account credentials you use for the web app. If you don’t have a PaperScorer account yet, see Creating a PaperScorer Account — you’ll need to register on the web app first; new account creation isn’t available from inside the mobile app.

Your First Scan (Quick Test)
Before using the app in the classroom, take a minute to test it with a sample sheet:
- Print any answer sheet from an assessment in the web app — see Printing an Assessment for a Class.
- Fill in a few bubbles on the sheet to simulate a student response.
- Lay the sheet flat on a well-lit surface.
- Open the mobile app and position your phone about 12–18 inches above the sheet, parallel to the surface.
- Wait for the on-screen guide to confirm detection — the app will auto-capture.
- Open the web app and check the assessment’s scan history to confirm the test scan landed.
If you can see the test scan in the web app, you’re ready to go.
