Importing Clever Classes and Rosters

This article walks through importing Clever classes and rosters into PaperScorer, and covers what happens when rosters change later. It assumes your Clever account is already connected — if it isn’t, see connecting your account to Clever first.

Enterprise feature. Clever integration is available to enterprise PaperScorer customers.

Running an Import

From any page in the application, click the create button and select the Class option.

From the “create new class” modal, select Clever import. (You may see additional options depending on which other accounts your institution has connected.)

You’ll see a list of available Clever classes you can import.

NOTE: Only active Clever classes are available to import. If a class is missing from the list, check the Clever portal to make sure the class is still active and that you’re assigned as the teacher in the district’s SIS roster.

  1. Name (required): the class name as it appears in Clever. You can change it to something different before saving in PaperScorer.
  2. Import (required): how PaperScorer should handle this class record at import time:
    1. Do not import class — the class will be skipped.
    2. Import with X students — the class will be imported along with its roster.
    3. Import without students — the class will be imported, but no students will be added. You can add or import them later.

After the import finishes, you’ll be redirected to your active class list and the new class(es) will appear there.

Keeping Rosters in Sync

The import is a one-time snapshot — PaperScorer doesn’t automatically reflect later changes in Clever. Since Clever rosters are typically driven by your district’s SIS, they tend to update around schedule changes (start of term, mid-year transfers, etc.). To pick up those changes in PaperScorer:

  • A student is added in Clever. Re-run the Clever import flow for the same class — new students will be added to the existing PaperScorer roster.
  • A student is removed in Clever. They won’t be auto-removed from PaperScorer. You can remove them manually from the class roster if needed; their existing scan history stays attached to them.
  • A student’s name changes in Clever. Re-importing the class roster will update the student record in PaperScorer to match the new name.

Edge Cases

A class is removed from my Clever roster between school terms.

The PaperScorer class stays, and you can keep accessing scan history for it. But the class will no longer appear in the “available classes” list, so you can’t re-sync the roster. This is normal end-of-term behavior — previously imported data remains available for review even after the Clever-side class is gone.

I see a class in Clever but it’s not in the import list.

Confirm three things: (1) the class is currently active in Clever; (2) the district’s SIS has you assigned as the teacher; (3) you connected to PaperScorer with the same Clever account that’s assigned to the class. If all three are true and the class still doesn’t appear, ask your district’s Clever administrator to confirm PaperScorer has been authorized to read the school/section, then try disconnecting and reconnecting your Clever account.

A student appears in my PaperScorer roster but I don’t recognize them.

Clever pulls roster data directly from your district’s SIS. If the SIS lists a student in your section, they’ll be imported. Check with your district about the SIS roster — either the SIS needs correcting or the student is on your roster officially.

I imported the same class twice.

PaperScorer detects classes already imported from Clever and updates the existing record rather than creating a duplicate. Students are matched by their Clever student ID, so re-importing won’t create duplicates.
