Managing Written Response Questions

This article will review the options and output for the written response question type.

A written response question will allow a student to write in their response to a question directly on the answer sheet. The response area comes in 5 different sizes, but it must be manually graded by the teacher.

Note, creating written response questions is a pro account feature. This requires that your account be upgraded to a pro account in order to use this feature. Learn more about upgrading to a pro account.

Once written response questions have been added to your assessment, there are a number of options you can configure for each question:

  1. Drag Handler: clicking on the three bars icon will allow you to drag the question to a new position in the list of questions. If auto labeling is enabled, the question label will automatically update.
  2. Size: you can select the size of the written response for this question. There are a few sizes to choose from when setting the response area size:
    1. Extra Small: couple of lines.
    2. Small: quarter of a page.
    3. Medium: half of a page.
    4. Large: three quarters of a page.
    5. Extra Large: full page.
  3. Points: the point value for a question is one. You can set the point value to any positive number. Decimal points are allowed when setting the point value.
  4. Standards: you can apply one or more standards to a particular question. We have the full set of common core standards, but we do allow you to upload custom standards into our system.
  5. Tags: you can apply one or more tags to a particular question. While we have the ability to apply standards to a question, tags are another way to slice reporting data.
  6. Actions Menu: this menu will show you all the options available to you for an assessment question. We will go over each action in other help documentation, but the edit feature will launch a modal for the question you wish to edit.

  1. Size: modify the size of the written response area for the scan sheet.
  2. Points: this will define the available score for a question. This value will need to be a numeric value and can contain a decimal point.
  3. Standards: manage the list of standards for a question. (important for reporting purposes)
  4. Tags: manage the list of tags for a question. (important for reporting purposes)
