Administration Guide - Optional Steps
This article walks Canvas administrators through the optional step of installing PaperScorer as a Canvas app, which adds a PaperScorer link directly to each course’s navigation. These steps are not required for the base integration — users can connect their accounts and sync data without them — but adding the course-nav link makes it easier for teachers to launch PaperScorer from inside Canvas.
For Canvas administrators only. Before completing these steps, make sure you’ve already completed the required administration setup. These optional steps reuse the same credentials, so the required steps must come first.
Step 1: Open the Apps Tab in Canvas Settings
From the main Canvas dashboard, click Admin in the main navigation. From the sub-menu, select the instance you want to connect to PaperScorer.

You’ll be directed to the admin settings page. From there, click Settings in the left navigation.

On the settings page, click the Apps tab.

Step 2: Find and Add the PaperScorer App
On the Apps tab, search for PaperScorer in the search bar. The PaperScorer app should be the only result. Click on its tile.

You’ll be taken to the app details page. Click the + Add App button.

A modal will appear to finalize the addition. All fields are required.

- Consumer Key (required): the same Developer Key ID you used when creating the connection in PaperScorer. Copy and paste it here.
- Shared Secret (required): the same Developer Key value (Client Secret) you used in the PaperScorer connection. Copy and paste it here.
- Click the Add App button to finalize.
If you haven’t created the connection inside the PaperScorer app yet, complete the required administration setup first. The Consumer Key and Shared Secret values come from that step.
After Installation
Once the app is installed, each course in your Canvas instance will show a PaperScorer link in its course navigation. When a teacher clicks the link:
- If they have an existing PaperScorer account, they’re signed straight in.
- If they don’t, they’re prompted to create one, with most fields pre-filled from their Canvas profile.
This is purely a convenience — teachers can still access PaperScorer directly at app.paperscorer.com and connect their Canvas accounts manually if you don’t install the app.
Removing the Course-Nav Link
If you want to remove the PaperScorer link from course navigation later, go back to the Apps tab in your Canvas settings, find the PaperScorer entry under installed apps, and remove it. This does not affect existing PaperScorer account connections — only the in-course navigation link.
