Changing an Assessment Performance Band

This article covers how to change the performance band on an assessment.

Managing performance bands is a Teacher Pro feature. You’ll need to upgrade your account to a Teacher Pro account to create, edit, and assign performance bands. Learn more about upgrading to Teacher Pro.

What a Performance Band Does

A performance band turns a student’s numeric score into a labeled tier (e.g. Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, Advanced). Each tier has a minimum score threshold and a color, used throughout reporting to make student performance easier to read at a glance. Every assessment is assigned a performance band — either the account default or one you’ve created.

Changing the Performance Band

From the dashboard, click the Assessments main-navigation option.

You’ll be taken to your assessment list. (If you haven’t created an assessment yet, see Creating an Assessment first.) Find the assessment whose performance band you want to change, click its action menu, and select Edit.

The edit assessment modal will open. Click the Change button next to the currently selected performance band.

A list of your available performance bands will appear. Click Select next to the one you want to apply.

The selected band will now show on the edit modal. Click Save to apply the change.

NOTE: Once you save the change, all previously scanned students for this assessment are re-scored against the new band. The recalculation usually completes in a few moments. Numeric scores don’t change — only the band/tier label and color do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I create new performance bands?

From your main dashboard, use Create NewPerformance Band. Each band is reusable across as many assessments as you want.

What if I want different bands for different units?

Create one performance band per unit (or per grading scheme), then assign each assessment to the matching band. Reusing bands across assessments keeps reporting consistent.

Can I edit a performance band after assessments are using it?

Yes. Edits to the band affect every assessment that uses it — previously scored students get re-tiered against the updated thresholds automatically.

What happens to old scan history when the band changes?

Underlying scan data and numeric scores stay exactly the same. Only the band/tier classification is recalculated — so reports look different, but no student data is lost.
