Managing Question and Answer Content

This article explains the two ways PaperScorer can handle the question and answer text for an assessment — managed elsewhere or managed in PaperScorer — and how your choice affects editing, printing, and versions.

You make this choice when you create an assessment, in the Question and answer content section. It appears as two tiles: Managed elsewhere (the default) and Managed in PaperScorer. The tile you pick controls whether PaperScorer stores the wording of your questions and answer choices, or only records the answer key.

Quick reference

Managed elsewhere Managed in PaperScorer
Question & answer text Kept on your own document Stored in PaperScorer
Answer key Set in PaperScorer Set in PaperScorer
Editing question & answer text Hidden Available
Printable question paper Not available Available
Versions Independent only Managed or independent

Managed elsewhere

Choose Managed elsewhere when you write and print your questions on your own document — a word processor file, a textbook, or a quiz from another system. PaperScorer never stores the wording of your questions or answer choices.

You still set the answer key and the answer-sheet structure in PaperScorer, and PaperScorer reads the scanned sheets and scores each response against that key. Because the text lives outside PaperScorer, the question and answer text boxes are hidden when you edit a question, and a printable question paper isn’t available.

NOTE: An assessment imported from a connected system, such as Google Classroom or another LMS, is always managed elsewhere.

Managed in PaperScorer

Choose Managed in PaperScorer when you want to write your questions and answers inside PaperScorer. PaperScorer stores the full text of every question and answer choice, so you can author and edit that content in one place. See Manage Assessment Questions to add and edit questions.

With content managed in PaperScorer you can also generate a printable question paper to hand out (see Printing a Question Paper), and create managed versions that stay in sync with the original and can scramble question or answer order (see Managing Multiple Versions).

Changing your choice

You can switch between the two modes from the assessment’s edit window — until you create a second version. Once an assessment has more than one version the content choice is locked, and the tile that is no longer available is shown as Disabled.
